SSL Native X-Saturator is a saturation and distortion plugin based on the behavior of analog gain circuits. It is designed to move from subtle harmonic enhancement to much more aggressive distortion, depending on how hard you push it.
The plugin lets you blend between second-order valve-style distortion and third-order transistor-style distortion. In practical terms, that means you can aim for smoother tube-like warmth, harder transistor grit, or something between the two.
Drive controls how hard the signal hits the saturation stage, while the Harmonics control shifts the distortion character between the valve and transistor sides. Depth sets how much harmonic content is added back into the signal, and Shape changes the edge of the saturation, ranging from smoother to more aggressive high-frequency overtones.
The Boost button adds 6 dB of headroom to help avoid internal clipping, and the Dry/Wet control makes parallel processing easy.
As usual with saturation plugins, it is easy to overdo it, but the Wet/Dry control should help keep things under control. The interface also includes input and output sections, A/B comparison, undo/redo, and factory preset support.
SSL Native X-Saturator runs on macOS 11 Big Sur through macOS 13 Ventura and Windows 10 or 11. It supports AU, VST2, VST3, and AAX Native on macOS, and VST2, VST3, and AAX Native on Windows. A free iLok account is required for authorization.
