CVA Labs has released Aether Stereo Exciter, a free and open-source harmonic enhancer for macOS and Windows.
Aether is an interesting take on the stereo exciter concept. It gives us two independent channels with Drive, Frequency, Contour, Air, limiter Threshold and Release, Makeup Gain, and Mix controls.
You can shape the left and right channels independently, or engage Stereo Link, which lets Channel 1 settings control both sides.
Each channel uses a parallel path with high-pass and low-pass filtering, an asymmetric nonlinear harmonic generator, a peak limiter, a DC blocker, and a final dry blend.
That gives Aether more range than a typical one-knob exciter. You can focus the harmonics on any band, shape their character, and blend the effect in parallel.
The developer said this is a circuit-inspired design rather than a component-perfect emulation of specific hardware. It runs with zero latency, so it’s suitable for live tracking and mixing.
CVA Labs has released quite a few plugins in a very short period. At the time of writing, its public GitHub page shows six releases between August 21 and August 30, 2026.
Apart from Aether, there is Vari-Fuzz, a three-mode fuzz plugin, plus the four-band Indigo PreQ equalizer and preamp. Air Theremin is a camera-controlled instrument played with hand movements.
The two standalone utilities are VST3 Player Host, which processes audio, MIDI, or live input through four plugin slots, and 3ch VST Mixer, with four inserts per channel and on the master bus.
Developers can work much faster nowadays, mainly because AI-assisted development tools speed up portions of the process. I asked CVA Labs about this, and the dev said that AI coding assistance played a significant role in accelerating both UI prototyping and C++/JUCE development, while he handled the DSP logic, circuit-modeling parameters, and feature design.
Apart from that, CVA’s approach reminds me a lot of Analog Obsession. The plugins are free, the interfaces often resemble hardware, and optional Patreon support helps fund development. If you enjoy that style, check out Analog Obsession’s recent MuChild compressor too.
My job is increasingly shifting toward rejecting dozens of plugins daily and finding tools that sound good in this new sea of releases (rather than scouring the web in a somewhat desperate search for new freebies like in the old days). Either way, these ones make the cut. I am interested in seeing what CVA Labs does next.
Aether Stereo Exciter 1.0.0 is available as a 64-bit VST3 plugin for Windows and macOS. The macOS download is a Universal Binary for Intel and Apple Silicon, although the builds are unsigned. Source code is available under the AGPLv3 license.
