Autodafe has released Vintage Emulator Studio, a free and open-source plugin that brings more than 40 vintage synthesizers, samplers, drum machines, and sound modules into one interface.
VES takes a very different approach from the usual sampled instrument or software recreation. It embeds selected machines from the MAME emulation project, so the emulation layer reproduces the original processor architecture, firmware, displays, controls, and storage devices.
Autodafe then wraps those machines in a JUCE-based environment with modern audio and MIDI routing, a resizable interface, front-panel controls, some nice-looking artwork, and, most importantly for us, the ability to run as a plugin in any DAW.
The current list is pretty wild. It includes the Akai MPC60, MPC3000, and S3000XL, Casio CZ-101 and CZ-1, Ensoniq ESQ-1 and SD-1, LinnDrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland TR-707 and TR-727, Sequential Prophet-5 and Six-Trak, and quite a few Yamaha instruments, including the DX100, TX81Z, MU50, and MU2000.
You can pick a machine from the VES toolbar, wait for its boot sequence where required, and tweak its controls through a recreation of the original hardware panel. VES can pass native MIDI to compatible instruments and add MIDI retrofit functionality to some machines that need extra help fitting into a modern setup.
Samplers can also work with emulated floppy disks, CD-ROMs, and hard-drive images where the underlying MAME driver supports them. VES provides access to that media, but you still use the original instrument’s operating system, so the hardware manual will often remain essential.
This firmware-driven workflow will be familiar if you have tried The Usual Suspects’ OsTIrus or Xenia. VES is broader,t though. It’s more like a studio with many different machines.
Unsurprisingly, there are some limitations you should be aware of. The accuracy depends on the state of each MAME driver, and the developer warns that some machines may have missing features, imperfect audio or MIDI behavior, unsupported peripherals, or unfinished MIDI retrofit mappings.
The free download uses Autodafe’s cart and €0 checkout, so you’ll need to complete that before getting the download. An optional €5 Supporter version is available, but both downloads are identical, and the free version has no restrictions.
After installing VES, you must still provide correctly named ROM or firmware files and configure them through its ROM settings.
VES does not distribute ROMs, firmware, factory disks, or commercial sample libraries. MAME’s own documentation directs users to authorized downloads or to ROMs read from hardware they own, and the applicable rules can vary by jurisdiction.
VES is available for macOS on Intel and Apple Silicon, Windows x64, and Linux x86_64. Standalone builds are available alongside AU and VST3 formats where supported. The original VES source code is licensed under AGPL-3.0-only and published on GitHub.
