Developer ABYZOR Audio has released Genesis, a Windows-only free MIDI generator plugin.
MIDI generators are handy tools when you’re struggling to get out of a creative block or need to lay something down as a quick placeholder.
Whether you need a helping hand with chord progressions, basslines, or melodies, there’s no shortage of options available.
There’s also no decline in the number of developers releasing new MIDI generators; just this year, we’ve had Fantamidi (a step sequencer and MIDI generator), Stepista (an AI-assisted MIDI pattern generator), and Bloomer Free (an emotional chord engine).
Now, we can add ABYZOR Genesis to the list (available in VST3 format for Windows 10/11).

One common theme among MIDI generators is that they tend to be a little quirky at times. For example, a chord generator might produce voicings that you wouldn’t typically play, or a pattern generator could suggest a bassline that doesn’t land on typical target notes when expected.
In any case, a little tweaking gets you back on track quickly. But, now and then, these quirks work out for the best, and you get something you’d never have used otherwise, and that’s one positive about having various options; they each have different quirks and tendencies.
Genesis is a bit of an all-rounder; it generates melodies, basslines, arpeggios, and chords.
The free plugin provides ten electronic music categories, including Techno, House, Trance, Drum & Bass, Ambient, Cinematic, Experimental, and more.
In addition to selecting a style/genre category, you can define the key and scale, pattern length, density, note length, and complexity.
Parameters such as density and complexity are important and help to avoid manually removing unnecessary notes from an otherwise good pattern.
There are a few things you can do to make your pattern sound more organic, such as adjusting the velocity range or the Humanise slider.
Once you’re happy with the pattern, you can drag it directly into a track loaded with your chosen virtual instrument.
If you want to keep the same core pattern, but add some variation going into a new section of your project, you can use the Mutate button.
Unfortunately, there’s no macOS version at the moment.
