TagoBeats has released TagoPitch, a free monophonic vocal pitch and formant shifter for macOS and Windows.
TagoPitch isn’t a pitch-correction tool, meaning it doesn’t analyze a performance and pull individual notes toward a selected scale like the recently covered AutoTune Go.
Instead, it shifts the entire vocal by a fixed interval. This makes it useful for experimenting with pitch-shifted hooks, harmonies, vocal chops, doubles, and ad-libs.
The Pitch control covers a full octave in either direction, from -12 to +12 semitones. TagoPitch also applies per-semitone level compensation to keep the output reasonably steady while you move through the range.
The more interesting part is the independent Formant control. A basic pitch shifter moves the vocal’s resonances along with its fundamental pitch, which is why large upward shifts can sound cartoonish and large downward shifts often produce the cliché monster voice from old movies.
TagoPitch lets you move those resonances independently to compensate for some of the character changes caused by pitch shifting, or to adjust the perceived size and weight of a voice without changing the melody. The real-time pitch engine uses Signalsmith Stretch, and it sounded pretty good during my test.
Since TagoPitch is monophonic, it is designed for a single vocal line rather than chords or complete mixes.
The Mix knob blends the processed and dry signals, while Gain handles the final output level. Also, the included presets provide quick starting points for common effects like octave-up and deep vocals.
The developer has also released TagoClip, a free soft clipper aimed primarily at drums and 808s. Its default curve recreates the behavior of Fruity Soft Clipper, with additional hard and tanh curves available for different clipping characters.
TagoClip adds optional 4x and 8x oversampling, a pretty handy Delta mode that plays only the audio removed by clipping, and a mono-low control to tighten the bottom end below a selected frequency.
Both plugins are available as VST3 and AU plugins on macOS, with signed and notarized installers, and as VST3 plugins on Windows.
Downloading either plugin requires an email address. The download link arrives by email, along with future product-release updates; there is no store checkout on the product page.
