Scape-O-Matic is an experimental sound generator for Native Instruments Kontakt, created and released as a free download by the brilliant Fairly Confusing Waveforms.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Fairly Confusing Waveforms makes some AWESOME stuff. He has released tons of unique and original sound libraries in the past couple of years and most of them are also completely free to download and use. The recently released Bleepman synthesizer was such a blast and the brand new Scape-O-Matic instrument continues the tradition of unusual and quirky Kontakt sound generators from this incredibly talented author.
The instrument is essentially a soundscape synthesizer with some cool randomization features. Although most of the parameters of the sound engine can be tweaked manually using on-screen controls, the red button labelled “ROLL DICE” is what makes Scape-O-Matic so incredibly fun to use and experiment with.
It literally takes a single button press to create an entirely new sound from scratch and you’ll be surprised by how cool the results are most of the time. Of course, sometimes it will sound like a dot-matrix printer on fire but that’s hardly not to be expected. If you enjoy experimenting with sounds and enjoy a bit of randomness from time to time, I’m sure you’ll find that this unique freebie instrument is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and a capable little sound design tool.
Scape-O-Matic reminds me a bit of Tiny Chaos Engine, which is another chaotic freebie instrument for Kontakt that’s worth checking out. If you like this kind of stuff and you don’t own Kontakt, you should definitely take a look at the legendary Oatmeal synthesizer which is included in our list of freeware synthesizers. Oatmeal is well known for its cool randomization features and it’s certainly one of the most powerful free synthesizers in general. It’s a very old plugin and it hasn’t been updated in quite a while, however it still has quite a lot to offer in terms of features and sheer synthesis power.
