Free Samples & Loops

  • Kicking off this year’s Halloween soundware freebies roundup is the excellent Horror Voices sample collection by Dance Midi Samples. Find a good place to hide in your studio before playing these!
  • Next up is the Zombie Drum Bits sound library for Native Instruments Kontakt, released by Rattly And Raw. The library contains a nice selection of spooky noises and horror sound effects, packed in a lovely 80s horror style user interface.
  • Reverb.com has published an interesting video tutorial about The Synth Sounds of John Carpenter, definitely a must watch for horror soundtrack fans. In addition to this awesome free video tutorial, they have also released a free set of corresponding MIDI clips which you can download here.
  • Another interesting offering this Halloween is the free FEAR! SFX sample library by Function Loops and their SHARP sound design label. It contains 100 spooky ambiances, scary SFX loops and horror vocal samples.
  • Orange Free Sounds has introduced Full Moon Walking, a free collection of spooky musical sequences and loops.
  • The Highest Producers has released Gun Sound Effects, a collection of 231 free gunshot samples. Not exactly Halloween themed, but it could definitely come in handy if you’re working on a horror soundtrack or something similar.
  • Moving on to regular (as in not inspired Halloween) soundware releases, we have the Ground Your Sound sample collection by The Pro Audio Files. It is a collection of 250 royalty free samples and loops crafted by Swedish producer and audio engineer Cristofer Odqvist. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of analog synthesizers.
  • Madder Than Thou has released two excellent freebie sample packs called 96 and Five Flavors Loops. Both releases are hosted on Sellfy, with optional donations.
  • A very interesting sample collection comes from Alavux, who has sampled a Korg Monotron powered by a set of almost completely empty batteries. Needless to say, the resulting sounds were rather unpredictable. The sample set is titled Dead Monotron and it’s a completely free download from Alavux’s website.
  • UNDRGRND SOUNDS has released a free Label Sampler containing 500 MB of free sounds from their various commercial releases.
  • If you liked our recently released BPB Cassette 808 sample library, you should also check out the free 909 Samples and 808 Samples freebies by Sample Magic.
  • SympleSound has introduced The FM Collection, a commercial sound library for Ableton Live. In addition to the premium content, they are also offering a free collection of royalty free MIDI clips (located on the same page) for everyone interested.
  • Finally, we have the Abstract Glitch & Noise sound pack by Antisample. While not exactly free, this is a “pay what you want” product with the minimum price of $2.99.

Free Synth Sound Banks

  • Synth1 is a legendary software synthesizer with hundreds of user made sound banks that are available for free download, scattered all around the web. Synthmorph has released yet another one, a rather nice free Synth1 sound bank called Synth1 Pluto Box. It also contains a bonus set of 10 MIDI sequences.
  • Fatbird (previously known as Modern Pro) is Vellislav Music’s epic collection of over 3,500 patches (organized into 28 individual sound banks) for Tone2’s brilliant Firebird freeware synthesizer. UPDATE: Actually, Fatbird is a commercial sound bank, and the free version only contains a single set of demo sounds. Thanks to our reader AJ for the clarification!
  • For U-He DIVA fans, Steve J. has released a nice little sound bank called Divasphere.
  • Yemski has released the commercial Duality sound bank for Serum by Xfer Records. On the same page, he is also offering a selection of 23 free patches from the sound bank, as well as an exclusive set of 280 wavetables for Serum.

And if you’re looking for even more Halloween themed sounds for your sample arsenal, you should definitely check out the amazing The Warehouse sound library by Richard Gould, released by 99Sounds. It’s hands down one of the best free horror-inspired sound libraries on the market, free or commercial.

That’s all we had in store for you this Halloween. Have a nice weekend, try not to eat too many candies and be sure to make some awesome music in the meanwhile!

  1. Just wanted to add that XLN Audio’s running a Halloween sale on their website. All Addictive Keys products (including bundles) are 50% off. Deal ends November 1st.

  2. You should probably note that Fatbird is a commercial soundbank, and that the free version only contains 1 bank of demo sounds. The article reads as if all 28 banks are free.
