Syntronik Instruments J-60 is a sample-based recreation of the Roland Juno-60 analog synthesizer. The legendary Juno is a relatively simple synthesizer by today’s standards. However, it is responsible for some of the most iconic synth riffs from the 80s, including songs like “Take On Me” by A-ha and “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper.
One of Juno’s defining characteristics is its lush chorus effect. It’s a simple two-preset chorus effect that can’t be customized, but it sounds fantastic. It was recreated by Togu Audio Line as the freeware TAL-Chorus plugin and inspired some other effects listed on our free chorus plugins page.
If you’d like to add some of Juno’s legacy to your DAW, the Syntronik version from IK Multimedia is worth a look. Syntronik is a free virtual instrument that uses multi-samples as the sound source. The base version is free, and IK Multimedia offers various multi-sampled synth expansions as paid add-ons.
Syntronik Instruments J-60 is one such expansion pack, and it’s currently available as a free download from Audio Plugin Deals.
With the Syntronik Instruments J-60 pack, you’re getting 78 instrument patches captured from the original Juno-60. IK Multimedia sampled 800 MB of content with over 2,000 individual samples.
While the included samples capture Juno’s character, Syntronik’s synthesis engine lets you customize the source sounds. You can apply filters, modulation, and a selection of effects to make the sampled Juno sounds your own.
The plugin offers several filter types, so you can mix and match various models with the patch you’re currently working on. You can also fine-tune the Filter Drive parameter to add a bit of saturation to the signal path.
I think that Syntronik’s interface is excellent for learning the basics of subtractive synthesis.
The controls are laid out intuitively, so figuring out which part of the synthesis engine does what is easy. If you’re only using presets on your synths, I recommend experimenting with Syntronik to learn how to customize sounds and make new synth patches from scratch.
Syntronik Instruments J-60 is available in VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for Windows and macOS. It requires the IK Multimedia Authorization Manager for installation and activation purposes.

onThank you for the heads up on this, but I find this policy from IK Multimedia to be pretty terrible, to be honest… in short, you have to keep paying for the product every 6 months. This is their policy for any of their “Sounds”, it seems.
“Sounds download will expire in 180 days. The time limit begins from the moment you register the included serial number. We do suggest to backup your sounds, as once your 180 days expire, download access can only be regained by purchasing a Sounds Reactivation Credit in the IK Multimedia Store.
The Sounds Reactivation Credit will reactivate the sounds download access for another 180 days time”

onThey definitely could have done better (many others provide free lifetime downloads), but in this case you’re paying for the ability to *download* their sounds after 6 months. It is also common to see many free offers limit your number of free downloads, or be time-limited. In IK Multimedia’s case, just immediately download whatever sounds you need, then copy & back-up the sound files somewhere, & use these files if you ever need to re-install something in future. No problems for me so far.

So is this just for their “free” products that this policy exists? If so, it isn’t quite so bad. The weird thing to me was that in 180 days you’d pay, but that payment only lasts for another 180 days (so the fact you initially got it for free seemed irrelevant here).
Also, you noted that it’s just the download that expires.. if that’s all, this isn’t quite so bad. If the software no longer is useable on your system, that’s not good, though. I haven’t actually installed this yet, as the 180 days thing scared me off. I initially assumed that in 180 days you could no longer use this, but I assume now that isn’t the case.

onTo clarify, no, you don’t have to pay again every 180 days for the PLUGINS, & you also get future plugin updates at no subsequent cost. I repeat, only the extra SOUND BANKS, aka the pre-recorded audio sample files of each instrument that may be loaded within the plugins, require an extra payment to be downloaded again after 180 days. These don’t need to receive software updates, & can be easily copied & backed-up into another drive (in fact, you might even get them from someone online who has them), & most of IK Multimedia’s effects-type plugins or emulated instruments do not rely on sound banks.

This 10€ is ONLY if you rely on their “cloud backup” of the sounds.Also normally a DAW Machine is not setup every 3 weeks (maybe once in 3 years) from scratch.This 10€ for a “Cloud Backup” is not much compared to the behavior of buying the newest iPhones for 1000+€ every year.
Where is the Problem to download everything (like i did with total studio 3.5MAX) and back it up yourself?
In my case there is around 500GB of files so i maybe have to spend 40€ for a 1TB HDD extra (to be on the safe side) when i don’t have this free space anyway. So where is the problem with the 2 or 3GB for the J60 only?
I think this System is fair if you compare the Size of these full Packages (Komplete 1.3TB,Total Studio 500GB,…) and the Revenue of IK (24M) to the one of Native Instruments (78M) or Ableton (73M)

onIf you want the Juno sound, but don’t want anything to do with IKM here’s few paid alternatives I can recommend:
1. Softube Model 84 (106 emulation)
it’s a little pricy at normal price, but there are plenty sales going on every now and then and you can easily pick it up less than 100bucks. This thing sounds EXACTLY like a real Juno, and it even has some improvements like actually making the unison worth using with added phase randomization (unlike the original). If you really love the vintage juno and roland sound, the price is nothing to basically have real 106 in your studio.

2. TAL-U-No-LX (60 emulation)

3. Cherry Audio DCO-106 (106 emulation)
This is by far the cheapest of these three (25bucks atm!) and while it’s not exactly a close replica, it does have that Juno sound and can sound very similar at certain presets. Even if it’s not 100% accurate, it’d still use this instead of a limited sample based library, especially if that means you have to deal with IKM’s bullshit authorization, installation and all that..

onGood call, I love Tyrell and have been using it for years! I actually still use it for certain type of sounds even though I own Softube’s Juno plugin. Soundwise I wouldn’t say it’s that close to a Juno 60 (or any Juno for that matter), I think you could recreate the Juno sound in Diva much closer. It’s has actually way more features than a Juno does, like two very customizable LFOs, modulation matrix, two oscillators and more waveforms and osc modulations, two envelopes and more filter types. The envelopes act a bit different than in Junos, you can make way snappier sounds with it, zero attack, close to zero decay. I don’t know if it will cure your Juno bug, but for a free synth I think it’s at least a must try for everyone!

onI’ve seen a mention about a Scotch Pipe sound in one of the Syntronik J60 pages, and didn’t open it immediately in a new page. In the meantime, the Edge browser closed all my opened pages, so when I went back to look for it in the Historic, I could never find it anymore.
