Angel Dust is the latest release from Witch Pig, the developer behind plugins like Black Mirror Reverb and Bangkok Ping Pong.
When it comes to Witch Pig plugins, there are a few things we’ve become accustomed to. One of which is a visually engaging interface, and Angel Dust is no exception.
Like Bangkok Ping Pong, the Angel Dust interface features an almost hypnotic movement that embodies the neverending sound.
More importantly, we’ve become accustomed to Witch Pig taking a creative character-altering approach to common effects.
Although a pitch-shifting delay isn’t a new concept, there’s the trusted Valhalla Delay, Airwindows PitchDelay, and Igorski’s Rechoir Delay, among many others; Angel Dust offers an easy entry point with some great presets.
There are eight presets to play with, and my favorites are Octaver and Nephilim.
Octaver sets the pitch an octave below (-12) on either side (left/right) and adds a slight delay with no feedback.
Even without feedback, octaves can get muddy fast, but with the right input, octaves with a slight delay add depth while letting the top notes ring out.
Nephilim is similar to Octaver, but this time, we get an octave below on the left side and a fifth above on the right.
Along with the depth from the octave setting, this preset adds some beautiful harmonic quality with the added fifth.
Again, with not too much delay and the right kind of input, it produces a very controllable and musical effect.
If you’d rather craft your effect from scratch than use the presets, Angel Dust provides controls for Pitch (L/R), Balance, Mix, Delay, Feedback, LFO, and frequency.
You can adjust the pitch in semitones for each channel (L/R), which means you can be as tension-free or dissonant as you like.
The Balance control allows you to emphasize one side over the other, which is useful when you have contrasting pitch settings.
The remaining controls adjust the general length and character of the delay.
As with all Witch Pig plugins, the developer asks that you subscribe to his YouTube channel. Once subscribed, the download link will become active.
I know this step has been divisive in the past, but you’re free to unsubscribe after downloading if so inclined.
Angel Dust comes with a note from the developer:
“There appears to be an issue when using the plugin with different block sizes than those used when developing it. Not sure how to fix this yet. Will start looking into it soon!”
Angel Dust is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
