Venus Theory has released auras:volts, the newest addition to the Auras series for Decent Sampler.
Like Polyscape, the previous Auras release, Volts offers some beautiful ambient and cinematic synth sounds.
This release is nothing but good news: Decent Sampler is free, Volts is free, and it brings us sounds curated from over $200,000 worth of hardware synths.
While Polyscape delivers sounds created exclusively by sampling Arturia’s excellent PolyBrute 12, Volts gets its character from a broad collection of synths sampled on the fly at convention.
If you’re familiar with Polyscape, you’ll see that Volts shares the same simple interface. Although simple, the featured dynamics/expression controls, filter, and FX section (delay and reverb) provide enough to make definitive changes to the sound.
My favorite feature of these Auras instruments is the A/B layering system, inspired by the PolyBrute 12.
The layer slider allows you to morph between similar or distinctly contrasting sounds. It’s perfect for guiding the texture and emotion of your sound in real-time.
As a series, Auras explores cinematic synth sounds and textures; Volts and Polyscape are very similar in many ways.
Both libraries are all about texture with some beautifully gritty evolving sounds. Volts, perhaps, isn’t quite so dark and ominous as Polyscape.
I know it’s how you use the sound harmonically, but even the darker sounds from Volts have a real reflective, pensive quality, which is so powerful in film scores. The sound quality isn’t surprising, given that Venus Theory is an outstanding sound designer and composer in this field.
It’s worth checking out the Venus Theory YouTube channel if you haven’t already; lots of good stuff there.
Another thing I like about Volts is that, despite the focus on atmosphere and texture, there’s excellent variation among the presets.
Some of my favorite sounds have a more prominent transient that allows you to craft melodic lines while maintaining that gritty, evolving texture underneath.
Decent Sampler is a gateway to some delightful free sounds, and the Auras series from Venus Theory is right up there with the best of them.
On a related note, if you’re looking for cinematic sounds, check out the recently released Pyro SFX cinematic starter kit by Flame Sound.
