FKFX Audio’s Dyna usually costs $29.99, but it’s available to download for free for a limited time. The limited-time offer is part of an introductory promotion lasting until 2025.
So, if it’s New Year’s Eve, 2024, and you’re partying like it’s 1999, and you suddenly remember it’s about to be 2025, and you end up in a frantic dash to download Dyna while it’s still free, just remember, you had plenty of time!
Dyna isn’t the first waveshaper distortion plugin we’ve encountered; last year, we checked out the free Wolf Shaper from Wolf Plugins.
And we can’t talk about distortion without mentioning our own BPB Dirty Filter Plus.
But, even with so many great freebies available, Dyna might offer something a little bit different, which is what we want and why we end up downloading so many variations of the same tool.
Dyna is a lite version of Dyna Pro. However, it is not short on functionality!
Dyna is an Elastic Morphing Waveshaper with a powerful and intuitive waveshaping editor. The plugin creates dynamic distortion by morphing between different distortion curves.
The Waveshaper module displays the current waveshaper curve, and you can enter editing mode by right-clicking on the module.
Editing mode provides fairly extensive shaping options with a Shape Manager and various Randomize functions. In addition to dragging points, you can use different drawing tools to customize the distortion curve with great precision, including line, decay, step, and attack pencils.
These tools allow you to craft the desired effect quickly, along with a snap-to-grid function with adjustable grid size.
In the main plugin view, the two dominant controls are Morph and Perturbator.
Morph transitions between waveshaper curves, and the Perturbator pushes the waveshaper to react to a particular note. You can sync the Perturbator effect to the incoming signal and use the Push Max button to maximize the impact (use carefully).
If you want to soften the effect rather than intensify it, the Air function adds a light and airy reverb at the output. I found the Air reverb very useful, and it sounds great when you play sparsely, letting the distorted notes ring out into space.
Dyna has over 100 presets ranging from subtle to brash distortion effects, bringing dynamic and evolving textures to your sound.
Dyna is available in AU, VST, and VST3 formats for macOS (11 and higher) and Windows (10 and higher).

You mean I gotta drink this coffee hot?!
onA weird one, this. None of the presets seem to do much at all, you have to tweak some parameters first, which means you can’t really flip through and find stuff. The wavetable editor is terribly unintuitive. The addition of the “air” function (i.e. just a little bit of reverb) is nice but you can’t tweak it AT ALL – far as I could figure out. Overall, I wouldn’t bother with this one if I were you. Free is nice and always tempting of course, but again in my opinion, you can skip this one.

onSo at first I too, thought the presets did nothing. After selecting a preset you have to tweak the morph knob to your own liking. According to my ears, I felt like moving the morph knob above 25% for most presets pushed the sound to noise territory really quickly. Otherwise, within the 25% range you can get decent tube-like distortion tones, depending on the curve you use. I tested with guitar and synth sounds.
The curve editor is not that bad. You can click and drag points on the curve, select a portion of the grid to randomize curve points, you can invert the contour of the curve, you can double or reduce the number of points on the curve’s contour, you can even offset the curve’s position to the left or right. Pretty decent editor if you ask me.
As for the perturbator, I honestly could get by just fine without it.
For a free waveshaper, Dyna easily gets 4/5.

onI have Influx and Sylab….. they both seem to do enough of this kind of weirdness for me. Passed on their recent freebie, and will probably pass on this one, too.

onIs this the “mysterious plugin” by FKFX Audio announced at 29.11.2024?
