Scaler Music has introduced Scaler 3, a powerful update to its flagship music theory plugin, now available as a standalone app and plugin for Windows and macOS.
Scaler 3 builds on its already impressive foundation with a complete interface redesign and a host of new creative tools.
One of my favorite upgrades is the ability to host VST and AU plugins directly within Scaler. This makes it far easier to sketch out full arrangements without the need to manually route MIDI across multiple tracks in your DAW. You can now load instruments and effects straight onto chord tracks and MIDI lanes.
The new Arrange page brings a timeline-style layout with separate lanes for chords, basslines, melodies, and phrases. Each lane syncs with the main chord track, allowing for easy arrangement tweaks and creative layering.
I particularly liked how the new Motions system makes this even more fluid. These include basslines, melodies, and rhythmic sequences that you can tweak or build from scratch using the integrated MIDI editor.
The Explore and Colors pages are great additions for those times when you’re stuck and need a harmonic shakeup.
Explore presents a genre- and mood-based “harmonic universe,” offering both safe and experimental chord suggestions. Colors, on the other hand, helps you find alternative voicings and substitutions to add variation and emotional nuance to your progressions.
You’ll also find hundreds of new chord sets and Motions crafted by pro musicians, alongside advanced tools like Harmonic Modifiers, improved Keys Lock, and a revamped Voice Leading engine.
It’s worth noting that these tools aren’t just for theory nerds. If you’re new to harmony, they can actually help you learn by doing.
Scaler 3.1, the first major update since launch, introduces Live Sync between plugin instances, a Bass Follow motion mode, and improved file and plugin management. You can now import chord sets, create custom folders, and enjoy better MIDI editing precision.
Overall, Scaler 3 feels like a fully integrated composition workstation and so much more than just a theory tool. I think it’s ideal for producers who want to deepen their understanding of harmony or just move faster when building tracks.
Scaler 3 is available now for an introductory price of $79 (regular $99), with a $29 upgrade for existing Scaler 2 users. It runs on Windows 8/macOS 10.14 and above, in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and standalone formats. You’ll need to register to download.
