Occult Audio has released Obscura, a free virtual instrument for macOS and Windows designed for creating dark, evolving soundscapes.
Obscura is a fun sample-based plugin built around a minimal interface and ten atmospheric drones. This marks Occult Audio’s first plugin that doesn’t require Kontakt or Kontakt Player, so there are basically no limitations to running it in your DAW.
Before we proceed, I would like to note that the download requires the Pulse Downloader to be installed on your computer. So if you don’t have it already, that’s an extra step needed to get Obscura for free.
The instrument features a relatively small set of controls. You get a sample selector, a waveform display for setting sample start and end points, a reverse button, and four effects (low-pass, high-pass, saturation, and reverb).
You can flip playback in reverse, isolate specific segments of a sample by dragging the start/end points, and quickly shift between different drones via a dropdown menu.
The included drones range from moody pads to gritty textures and are pretty good for horror scoring, cinematic underscores, or experimental music.
What I like here is the hands-on approach to sound shaping. I appreciate how easily the sample playback range can be adjusted to capture interesting moments in each drone.
The included effects are very basic but usable; the saturation and reverb, in particular, help add depth and grit to the sounds. That said, I think you need a good reverb (like the recently featured MYON) to really bring these sounds to life.
Overall, considering it’s free, Obscura is a fun little plugin if you want quick access to dark textures. It’s a nice and quick sketchpad for exploring dark sounds, and the simplicity of the interface keeps the focus on creativity instead of diving through menus and controls.
That said, there are a couple of things I would have liked to see. There’s no way to adjust the attack or release of the sounds, which would have made some of the drones more playable. This is especially true if you want smoother fades for ambient parts.
A simple delay effect would’ve also fit nicely with these sounds. From the interface, it seems like Obscura might’ve been built with MAZE Sampler (though I’m not 100% sure), and adding envelope controls would be a straightforward improvement if that’s the case.
