If you’re into ambience, drone, soundscapes, or just lush, evolving pads in general, you might want to check out the new developer Full Fx Media and their first free offering – Diffusia.
Diffusia is a synthesizer VST with a simple and clear user interface, designed for quickly dialing in immersive soundscapes without menu navigation or numerous parameters. While basic-looking on the surface, the synth still packs quite a punch.
It works for macOS, Windows, and Linux users!
Diffusia packs a 6-voice polyphonic engine with selectable mono mode, multiple waveform selection for interesting timbres and textures, amp envelope, a resonant filter for sculpting and shaping, and a unison mode for those thick and wide sounds.
The plugin also features a couple of built-in effects, including tremolo, chorus, and reverb, to add additional width, depth, and movement to the sounds.
I quite like this interface and the fact that it’s so simple. Huge synths with a million different parameters are always fun, but sometimes you just want to plug and play instead of tweaking all night.
Diffusia´s layout is as follows: from left to right, we have an envelope section, a tone section, and an effects section. At the bottom of the UI, there’s a virtual piano that shows the received MIDI inputs.
The envelope section has your most basic ADSR control.
The tone section has a variety of selectable waveforms, a unison knob, and two filter controls, cutoff and resonance to be specific, as well as selectable filter types.
The effects section has a drift module with adjustable rate and depth controls, a chorus module with rate, depth, and mix controls, a reverb with decay and mix knobs, and a master output to control your overall volume.
All in all, I think this plugin sounds cool and has a charming, easy-to-understand interface.
While Diffusia might be limited in the normal sense, it delivers on being handy for drones and other soundscapes. Automating the different parameters is all you need to get a constantly evolving sound with little effort.
Diffusia will also get a manual soon, if you ever want to dive deeper into what goes on under the hood.
