Zqueezer is one of those plugins that has more going on than meets the eye.

The plugin has just three controls: Gain, Overtone, and Dry/Wet, with Overtone being the foundation of the effect.

W.A. Production suggests it’s best to forget about the science behind the effect and just listen to what Zqueezer can do.

In short, when used on a monophonic source, Zqueezer acts like an adaptive filter of sorts, adding harmonics and a kind of formant-shifting effect.

With polyphonic material, the effect produces “a complex network of partial tones and intermodulations.”

The simpler way to think of it is that Zqueezer is a straightforward plugin that you can use on synths and vocals in a couple of ways.

Although it’s a creative effect, you can use it in a more utilitarian way. For example, if you have a sub-bass that sounds great on studio monitors but goes missing on laptops, phones, etc., adding more upper-frequency content can help it cut through with more presence.

If you push a little further, it becomes a characterful effect, almost dragging a new melodic line from a sub bass.

Alternatively, if it’s all about character, you can crank the Overtone dial further and push the Gain harder to bring all of that harmonic content closer to the front. And if you have a polysynth pad or sequence, Zqueezer can really add excitement to something that might otherwise sound a bit ordinary.

Using Zqueezer on vocals probably wouldn’t be my go-to choice, unless I wanted to create an obviously synthetic sound, but there’s lots of room to play there, too.
