When it comes to soft synths, very few developers do it as well as u-he. Now, their Zebra 3 edges closer to official status with the final beta release
The Berlin-based developer has been one of my favourites for a very long time and regularly features in many best free or paid synth articles.
Zebra 3 is the latest version of u-he’s flagship synth, and this final beta release could be your last chance to test it out for free.
Once officially released, Zebra 3 will cost €249, but there are a couple of ways to save some money.
If you pre-order Zebra 3 during the final beta stage, you’ll get a €70 discount, bringing the price down to €179.
Anyone with a Zebra 2 license (before it became the Zebra Legacy) can upgrade to Zebra 3 for €30.
If you aren’t ready to buy a new synth, don’t forget that u-he recently released Zebralette 3, the latest iteration of a freeware classic, and little brother to Zebra 3.
One of the highlights of this final beta is the improved and decluttered interface.
The enhanced interface focuses on efficiency from the ground up, starting with consistent parameter layouts across the board.
Another update that helps you work fast and stay in the moment is that certain elements disappear when not used.
The ModMatrix features colour-coded slots, and the colour scheme makes it easy to see all available modules clearly (Oscillators, Manglers, Filters, etc.).
I’ve had a little play around with the updated interface today, and I’ve enjoyed it. With a synth like Zebra 3, there’s always a lot going on, but clear text and thoughtful organisation keep it from looking overwhelming.
There are now over 1200 factory presets, and the growing list includes some surprising entries.
For example, there are a few variations of a Felt Grand patch that might not be what people imagine when thinking of Zebra 3, but they are gorgeous cinematic piano tones.
As expected, basses, drones, pads, leads, and poly synth presets are excellent.
Class of 79 is one of my early favourites.
Since an official release could potentially be just days away, this final beta addresses known bugs and issues.
