From developer Deadloop comes MoonVerb, a free shimmer reverb plugin for macOS and Windows.
Reverb is an effect that we couldn’t live without because it plays so many roles in our music production and mixing.
It’s anything from taking the edge off vocals so they feel like part of a mix to otherworldly sound design, and everything in between.
But, despite its importance, it’s sometimes a hard sell because one common response to a new reverb plugin is to ask, “Do I really need another reverb plugin?”
The answer is undeniably yes or no.
Most of us probably have more plugins than we can get around to using (regularly, at least), and we’ve had some great free reverbs like SOL by S1gns Of L1fe, Phantom Sounds Orbit, and Variety of Sound’s epicVerb, to name a few.
The counterargument to having too many plugins is that each one is uniquely beneficial for specific scenarios (well, mostly).
So, we prefer the question, do I want another reverb plugin? – It’s much easier to answer.
MoonVerb by DeadLoop sits firmly in the sound design camp, although you could use it for other things; turning ordinary sounds into huge ethereal soundscapes is what it does best.
In fairness, the Shimmer effect, without much modulation, etc., sounds nice on guitar/keyboard parts that are a little dull.
But the go-big-or-go-home approach is still where MoonVerb does its best work.
MoonVerb is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows.
It all starts with the Shiimer, a pitch-shifted +1 octave feedback effect that can add sparkle or create a fully evolving atmosphere.
But if you want to get more creative with movement and texture, you can add LFO modulation on the delay lines.
You can also create pads and drones from any sound using the Freeze function.
MoonVerb ships with fifteen factory presets from subtle ambience to infinite space.
You can download MoonVerb by providing an email address on the product page.
Although the download button doesn’t function until you enter an email address, you don’t need to sign up for the newsletter if you prefer not to.
Of course, if you like the plugin, it’s always good to show support in some way.
