Tweakbench has released Jigsaw, a free pedal board effect plugin for macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS.
This one is not groundbreaking, but it is still a reason to celebrate for me. Tweakbench is an old-school indie developer, and seeing that name in the news takes me back to the old days, when there were only a handful of freeware VST developers making weird and memorable free plugins.
Earlier this year, Tweakbench returned to plugin development after a long break, rebuilding its old plugins for modern systems and reintroducing many of them with a small price tag. Quite a few of those plugins used to be free, but the new versions are updated, cross-platform, and compatible with current DAWs.
That whole era also reminds me of Smartelectronix, the old freeware plugin collective around developers like Bram de Jong, Destroy FX, Tobybear, and others.
Now, I do not want to rewrite history and say Tweakbench was part of Smartelectronix proper, but my point is, those names all belong to the same early internet freeware VST world, and I dearly miss it.
I used many Tweakbench plugins in my first music projects. Tapeworm and Peach were among my favorites, especially Peach because of its NES-style sounds.
So yes, when a developer I originally covered in the early days of BPB comes back and releases something new for free, I am happy to see it.
Jigsaw is a simple pedal board-style effect where you can build a six-slot serial chain from twelve lego-style blocks. The available blocks are Fuzz, Crush, Tape, Filter, Wobble, Phase, Echo, Spring, Hall, Hiss, Warble, and Ring.
You can drag blocks around to reorder the chain, swap them without clicks, and use the !!! randomizer to roll entire boards. The interface is simple, but it looks snappy and easy to use, which is exactly what I want from this kind of plugin.
Many BPB readers already know how much I like guitar pedal-style effects, especially on synths and during sound design work.
Jigsaw is obviously the perfect fit for that type of workflow. It is a fun little multi-effect for quickly stacking character effects, and I’ll definitely use it on some synths in my future projects. Oh, and it works on iOS, too!
Jigsaw is available in AU, VST3, CLAP, and LV2 formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus AUv3 for iOS. It has no DRM, includes lifetime free updates, and is free to download from the Tweakbench website.
