TubeOhm has released TO-Sampler, a free sampler plugin and standalone instrument for Windows.
The main reason I’m featuring this one in the news is that we recently covered SynthEdit 1.6, which finally added native macOS support after decades of being a Windows-first plugin development environment.
TO-Sampler is Windows-only for now, so it is a good example of where that SynthEdit update could be useful. Plugins like this might get macOS versions in the future thanks to the newer export options, and it is interesting to see a fresh SynthEdit release arrive right after that update.
It also feels like a good example of a classic SynthEdit plugin. Before the current era of vibe-coded plugins, SynthEdit and similar tools were how many non-programmers could build plugins without writing everything by hand.
You connected pre-made modules, designed the interface, and turned an idea into something you could load in a DAW without actually coding the whole thing.
That scene had a mixed reputation. Plenty of SynthEdit plugins were rough, generic, or badly optimized, which is part of why I recently wrote that vibe-coded plugins are giving me SynthEdit déjà vu. But SynthEdit also led to some really good freeware, and TubeOhm was one of the developers who did solid work with it over the years.
As for the plugin itself, TO-Sampler is a straightforward software sampler with a few synth-style extras. You can record audio directly into the sampler or import WAV files, then use the waveform display to edit the start, end, loop start, and loop end points.
There is also crossfade looping for smoother sustained sounds, which is always useful when building simple playable instruments from short samples. The maximum sample size is listed as 5 MB, so this is more of a quick sound-design sampler than a huge multi-gigabyte library platform.
The synthesis side includes a multimode filter, separate ADSR envelopes for the filter and amp, another modulation envelope, and an LFO for pitch, filter, and amplitude movement. TubeOhm also included bit reduction down to 2-bit resolution, soft distortion, stereo chorus, delay, room reverb, stereo spread, an arpeggiator, and a chord generator.
TO-Sampler can store up to 128 presets, which should make it handy for creating small custom instruments, lo-fi sounds, and quick sample-based patches without opening a larger sampler.
TO-Sampler is available for Windows as a VST3 plugin and standalone application.
