Pro2Max has released Unirock HumStrat, a free HSS electric guitar virtual instrument for Windows.
HumStrat is available as a VST3 plugin and a standalone application. The important detail is that this is not a lite edition or teaser version of a larger instrument. The complete instrument is free, with no paid upgrade or feature-restricted tier above it.
The library is around 1.7 GB and includes samples across every fret, with five pickup positions, round-robin variations, multiple velocity layers, and several performance articulations. Pretty cool for a guitar freebie.
The five pickup positions cover bridge humbucker, bridge plus middle, middle, middle plus neck, and neck. That makes HumStrat a lot more flexible than the typical one-position guitar freebie, especially if you want to use it as a DI source and shape the final tone using third-party tools.
That DI part is worth pointing out because the demo recordings use third-party amp, cabinet, and effects processing, and HumStrat itself outputs a DI-style electric guitar signal. In other words, you will probably want to run it through your favorite amp sim and guitar effects chain to get proper guitar tones.
The articulation list includes sustain, palm mute, dead notes, natural harmonics, pinch harmonics, slide up, slide down, vibrato, legato slide, and pick scrapes. Articulations and pickup selection can be handled with keyswitches, and there are also volume and tone controls plus an Auto Sustain option.
Free guitar instruments are definitely useful if you cannot play guitar or need quick mockups before recording the real thing. HumStrat is more detailed than the smallest sketching tools, but it is still Windows-only, so macOS and Linux users are out of luck for now.
Unirock HumStrat requires Windows 10 or later, a 64-bit VST3-compatible host for plugin use, and around 1.7 GB of free disk space. The standalone version is included in the same download.
