Roland has released Melody Flip, a free AI-assisted songwriting plugin for macOS and Windows.
I was quite surprised by this one. We see independent developers release free MIDI generators all the time, but it is unusual to get one from a company as established as Roland, especially considering it uses technology developed through a collaboration with Sony Computer Science Laboratories.
Although Roland describes Melody Flip as AI-assisted, it is not one of those prompt-based tools that spit out a finished song. It is more of an idea generator to get past the blank-page stage, with results you can export as MIDI and continue editing with your own instruments.
You can start in two ways. The first is to browse a library of more than 250 Palettes covering pop, rock, EDM, R&B, jazz, anime, ambient, world music, and other styles.
Each Palette provides an eight-measure musical framework with connected melody, chord, bass, and drum parts. From here, you can choose one, set the key and tempo, and press Compose to generate new melody variations. You can also adjust the Note Density control, which lets you make the melody busier or simpler.
The second option is Reference Search. With it, you can load a song, beat, loop, or unfinished idea, and Melody Flip analyzes its structure, tempo, beat positions, key, chord progression, genre, and mood. You can select a detected section, such as a verse or chorus, and the plugin recommends Palettes with similar musical characteristics.
Importantly, it does not copy the reference melody. Roland says the analysis uses music information retrieval research from Sony CSL to find appropriate Palettes, while the new melodies are generated randomly.
You can filter the library by genre, key, BPM, and mood tags, save favorite Palettes, and adjust the volume and instrument sound for each part. The internal mixer also includes a reverb with room size, damping, wet, and dry controls.
When you find something useful, the melody, chords, bass, and drums can be exported individually as MIDI files and dragged into your DAW. Audio export is also available, although selected parts are rendered together as a mixdown rather than separate files.
There is one important limitation: Melody Flip does not support total recall. Generated melodies may disappear when you reload a project, switch screens, or reload the plugin. Imported reference tracks and their analysis are not retained either, so export anything you want to keep before moving on.
Melody Flip is included with every Roland Cloud membership, including the free tier. However, you need a free Roland account and Roland Cloud Manager 3.1.23 or newer to install and authorize it.
The plugin is available in VST3 format for Windows 11 and in VST3 and AU formats for macOS 14, 15, and 26.
