NoirSonance has released Decompressor, a free/pay-what-you-want upward dynamics plugin for macOS and Windows.
We have covered NoirSonance several times on BPB, most recently when the developer made all 12 NoirSonance plugins free with optional donations. The catalog has been reorganized since then, and Decompressor is the newest freebie in the lineup.
Decompressor is designed to bring some movement back into audio that has become too flat as a result of, you gest it, overcompressoion.
Now, of course, it is not a time machine, and NoirSonance is clear that it cannot reconstruct information permanently removed by clipping or hard limiting. But if some natural level differences are still present, it can exaggerate them and make the material feel more dynamic.
I tested Decompressor today, and it is very easy to set up. There is really no learning curve here. You load it in your DAW, adjust the Threshold and Ratio controls, and quickly hear whether it helps the source breathe a little more.
I like having this type of upward dynamics tool in such a simple format. It can be useful on drum loops, drum groups, or other overly compressed audio where you want to bring back more contrast between hits without rebuilding the part from scratch.
The plugin has seven parameters. Threshold sets the level above which the upward expansion starts, Ratio controls how strong the effect is, and Attack and Release shape how quickly it reacts to the groove. Pre-Gain drives the signal into the detector, Makeup adjusts the output level, and Dry/Wet is there to make parallel processing easy.
Start gently with the Ratio and Dry/Wet controls, especially if the source is already heavily processed. Decompressor can push accents forward and add motion, but the best use case is enhancing movement that is already there rather than trying to repair completely crushed audio.
NoirSonance also added three recent pay-what-you-want desktop tools. Creative Pressure is a focused writing/work session app with timers, Train Rain, Static, and Silence sound modes, local notes, and a Rage Mode that removes pauses during an active session.
Void Room is a minimal offline writing space with a timer, rain or static noise, and a local archive. Signal vs Noise is a writing distillation app that makes you reduce a raw thought, lyric, or note into a shorter final line.
Decompressor is available as a free/pay-what-you-want download. You can choose €0 to download it for free or enter any amount to support future NoirSonance development.
The download includes a Windows installer and a macOS package with AU and VST3 versions.
