As for the API Collection itself, this is one of the Waves’ best-selling plugin bundles. The included effects are all modeled after the original API devices and in collaboration with their creators.

Here’s what you’re getting with the API Collection.

API 2500

API 2500 is a very beefy compressor that boasts some pretty unique functionality. Aside from the usual compressor controls, the API 2500 also has a Tone and Link section. Right after the Threshold button, you’ll find a very interesting “Thrust®” switch. Putting it to “Norm” produces no changes, but setting it to either “Med” or “Loud” applies attenuation to your signal.

“Med” slightly boosts your low and high frequencies, with a flat mid-range affecting the signal going into the RMS detector. The intended use for this is to reduce pumping caused by low frequencies and increases the RMS detectors’ sensitivity to higher frequencies, affecting overall signal recognition.

“Loud” applies a gradual linear filter that attenuates by 15 dB at 20 Hz and increases by 15 dB at 20 kHz. Similarly to the above setting, this decreases low-frequency pumping while increasing higher frequency compression.

Flicking the “Type” switch changes between “New” and “Old.” “New” provides what’s called “feed-forward compression,” i.e., it works like newer VCA-based compressors. In “Old,” the RMS detector receives a signal from the VCA output and then feeds the VCA a signal based on the set signal ratio.

API 550A & API 550B

The API 550A and API 550B are a 3-band parametric EQ with five fixed cutoff points per band and a 4-band parametric EQ with seven cutoff points, respectively. Both also have interchangeable overlapping frequency bands and analog modeling that can be turned on or off. The 550B also has a very robust filter section.

API 560

API 560 is an even more precise graphic equalizer featuring a 10-Band equalizer divided into one octave increments. Famous for its precision filtering and high headroom, the API 560 is ideal for signal enhancement and room tuning.

All three equalizers also feature proportional Q, meaning that the Q values change proportionally as the gain is increased or decreased.
