Sound Magic, the developer that recently made its DynamicX Standard Version free to download, is back with another addition to its orchestral lineup – Violin One, a free solo violin instrument for Windows..
Current Sound Magic freebies include instruments like Strings One and Cadenza Ukulele. The latest addition is a solo violin that aims to make physical modeling more accessible.
Violin One combines physical modeling and behavior modeling to deliver optimal playability without consuming valuable disk space.

Since Violin One is Windows-only (VST3 version available), the journey ends here for me and the other Mac users. But it seems that a Mac version is in the pipeline, and I’ll be waiting to give it a go when it’s ready.
As it stands, it would be unfair to comment too much on the authenticity of the sound, especially with a lack of demo content. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
Although I can’t play the Violin One yet, there are things that I like about the concept. I like the attention to behavior modeling because it’s often the performance details and human element that make a virtual instrument stand out.
I also like the MPE support and the amount of control provided through the lovely interface.
You can adjust the Dynamic Range, Attack, Sustain, Legato, and Modeling Timbre. The Virtual Stage tab allows you to select your space type from a concert hall, studio, small room, or hall. You can also change the microphone type/settings.
There are a lot of positives on paper. Still, it has to sound the part, especially with recent releases like Sonixinema’s Delicate Strings and Whispering Winds raising the bar for orchestral freebies.
I’ve heard a little so far, and one of the things I liked was the scratchy/gritty tone. Too many virtual violins ignore that side of the instrument’s character.
I haven’t heard the sweet and haunting elements of the violin’s character yet, and I hope it’s something that Violin One does well. But I’ll rely on the Windows folks to let me know for now.
Violin One is available to download for free in VST3 format for Windows.
I don’t have any further info on compatibility requirements yet, so if you run into any problems with specific versions of Windows, please share. Thanks!
