Beat and Erica Synths have teamed up to create NOCTURNA, a collection of 66 free impulse responses crafted from their Echolocator and Nightverb hardware units.
This is a cool set of unusual reverb impulses, especially if you’re interested in exploring convolution reverb beyond the basic bread and butter sounds.
If you’ve ever used reverb impulse responses before, you’ll know how they can breathe new life into a project. If not, read our article about free convolution reverbs to get started.
Reverb impulses are typically used to replicate the acoustics of real spaces or vintage reverb units, but NOCTURNA brings something different to the table – the unique and unpredictable character of two boutique effects from Erica Synths.
This free pack includes 33 IRs from the Echolocator and another 33 from the Nightverb. Keep in mind that these aren’t your standard studio or plate reverbs. The sounds are strange, weirdly musical, and sometimes a bit chaotic in a good way.
I found that they work especially well for lo-fi electronic music, ambient textures, and experimental sound design. If you’re trying to move away from the typical reverb options, these might just be what you need.
The Echolocator IRs feature shimmering, modulated echoes and delay-style spaces, while the Nightverb IRs lean toward long, harmonically rich decays. Some impulses evolve over time, with bursts of feedback and spectral shifts that almost feel like you’re tweaking the hardware device in front of you.
And I have to point out that these aren’t subtle reverbs. They’re more like ambient textures that can become part of your composition.
What’s also cool is that Beat has you covered even if you don’t already have a convolution reverb plugin. The download includes Convology XT, a free convolution reverb plugin for Windows and macOS. That means you’ll have everything you need to dive in straight away.
One thing to note: the ZIP file is password-protected. The password is the number of user slots the Echolocator offers. You can find that on the Echolocator’s product page over at Erica Synths.
By the way, if you’re looking for even more IR fun, I highly recommend Wave Alchemy’s Magic7 plugin, which includes convolution models of the legendary Bricasti M7 and is also free. And one of their other reverbs is currently free with any purchase on Plugin Boutique.
NOCTURNA is available now as a free download via ZamplerSounds. The impulse responses work with any convolution reverb plugin that supports WAV files. Convology XT is provided in VST, AU, and AAX formats, and the IRs are compatible with all major DAWs on Windows and macOS.
