Reflex Acoustics has released Reflexive EQ, a free dynamic EQ plugin for macOS and Windows.
Free dynamic EQ plugins aren’t as common at all, especially good ones. That said, we recently covered ZL Equalizer 2, which is quickly becoming one of the strongest freeware options around, even competing with high-end tools like FabFilter Pro-Q.
Reflexive EQ enters that same territory, and after spending some time with it, I think it absolutely earns its place on your hard drive.
The plugin gives you four fully independent dynamic EQ bells, each capable of compression or expansion. You can process mid or side information per band, customize the detector range, and even audition it.
Reflexive EQ also features attack and release controls for each bell, plus up to 10 ms look-ahead for more precise shaping. And I found that thanks to automatic gain-staging and threshold handling, it’s surprisingly quick to dial in.
One of the main things that stood out to me is the interface. Reflex Acoustics isn’t trying to impress with flashy visuals, which really wouldn’t make sense in a dynamic EQ meant for precise control.
Instead, they’re giving us a clear, slightly scientific-looking layout that helps with focus. The huge spectrum display is great, and everything feels easy to grab and tweak.
It’s not the most modern-looking GUI, but honestly, that’s part of the charm. It feels like a scientific tool built for getting work done without distractions.
I also really appreciate that the plugin can run with zero latency if you don’t need look-ahead. That instantly makes it more flexible for tracking, not just mixing.
Reflex Acoustics has been steadily building a solid lineup (we covered their Reflex Limiter and Reflex Spectrum Analyzer last year), and Reflexive EQ continues that trend. They seem to enjoy creating thoughtfully designed and practical tools.
You also get factory presets, a resizable interface, external sidechain support, and a spectrum analyzer with enhanced low-end resolution. When using an external sidechain, the analyzer even highlights potentially clashing frequencies, which is super handy for ducking or clearing space.
Reflexive EQ is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for Windows and macOS. Zero-latency operation is available when look-ahead is disabled; enabling look-ahead introduces up to 10 ms latency.
