Morphoice has released WingMen, a free chorus plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
We have covered quite a few Morphoice synths lately, including the EightySix Juno-6 emulation and the more recent EightyTen JX-8P/SuperJX-10 emulation. WingMen takes the chorus sections from some of the developer’s full synth emulations and offers them as a separate effect.
The plugin has eight algorithms modeled after the chorus circuits of three classic Roland instruments. The EightySix section covers the Juno-6-style ensemble chorus, including Mode I, Mode II, and the “both buttons down” setting.
The EightyTen section is based on the JX-8P chorus, while the EightyFifty section is modeled after the D-50’s digital chorus, with Chorus 1, Chorus 2, and Dimension algorithms taken from original hardware measurements.
There are already several Juno-style chorus plugins around, and we covered a few limited-time freebies in the same lane last year and this year, including Sonic Academy’s JU-60, schulz.audio’s JUNI 1984, and AIR Music Technology’s Jura Chorus.
I still use and recommend TAL-Chorus-LX as my main choice for this kind of sound, but WingMen is worth a look if you want a free chorus with more than one classic Roland flavor in a single plugin.
The interface shares the same colorful visual style as Morphoice’s synth plugins. I am not sure how it was made, so I would not frame it as an AI-made plugin, but visually it does have that modern DIY plugin look to me.
The sound is decent, and the extra algorithms make it more interesting than another simple one-mode Juno chorus clone.
You can adjust Balance, Stereo Width, Noise, Rate, Depth, and Delay, so there is more control here than on the original one-button chorus sections. It also includes low-cut and high-cut filters for cleaning up the processed signal if needed.
WingMen v1.2.0 is available as a free Gumroad download. It runs in VST3 format on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with AU also available on macOS. The Mac version supports Intel and Apple Silicon systems, and the listed minimum requirement is macOS Ventura 13.6.
