FX-Mechanics has released Mango, a free and open-source modular glitch effect for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
It’s not a surprise that Kieran Foster’s Glitch comes to mind when looking at a plugin like this. We recently covered Glitch again because Kieran, also known as illformed and dblue, sadly passed away, and Glitch² is now available for free in his memory.
The original dblue Glitch helped define the whole tempo-synced glitch effect format for a lot of producers. It made it easy to slice, reverse, gate, repeat, and mangle loops into something chaotic but still musical.
Many similar tools have followed over the years, and Mango is one of the latest free variations on that same idea.
Mango is a modular sound glitcher and mangler. Much like Glitch, it uses a step sequencer with up to eight lanes, each controlling one effect. You draw blocks onto a lane, and the effect only processes the audio while the playhead is inside that block. Outside the block, the lane stays transparent.
The lanes stack from top to bottom, so they behave like a sequenced effect chain. You can reorder lanes, mute or solo them, and decide how many lanes are active, from one to eight.
What I like here, though, is seeded randomness. Instead of setting one fixed rhythmic rate for every effect, you can weight note lengths such as 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, and 1/64, and then Mango draws the actual value per block.
Because the result is tied to the seed, lane, and block, the pattern plays back the same way in real time and in offline bounces. When you turn the Seed knob, the whole pattern re-rolls.
The available lane effects include Gater, Grain, Delay, Distortion, Filter, Quantizer, Ring Modulator, Reverser, Spectral Freeze, Aux Send, and Pan. That covers the usual glitch ingredients, from rhythmic chopping and bitcrushing to reverse slices, frozen textures, tempo-synced delay tricks, and panning movement.
Mango can also receive MIDI notes. It does not generate sound from MIDI, but the notes can drive certain block parameters, so a delay can tune itself to what you play in the PlayMidi presets.
The plugin is more technical than a one-button glitch effect, but that is the point. If you want a deeper free tool for building tempo-synced stutters, transitions, and mangled loop variations, Mango looks like a very interesting download.
Mango is available in VST3, AU, and standalone formats. The macOS build is universal for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs and runs on macOS 10.13 or later, but it is unsigned, so users may need to clear the quarantine flag before it appears in a DAW.
