Jeesonic releases Metering Cockpit, a FREE loudness meter for macOS and Windows

Developer Jeesonic has released a free loudness meter for macOS and Windows, called Metering Cockpit.

Loudness meters or analysers are rarely the first thing on our minds when we have some spare cash for plugins, but they are often the unsung hero of any music-maker’s workflow.

Luckily for us, we don’t need to spend a small fortune to make sure our tracks meet industry standards across all platforms.

There’s an ever-growing list of free plugins that help us keep loudness and dynamics in check, including the much-loved Youlean Loudness Meter (free version), SaschArt’s LoudnessMeterFree, and Volume Dealer by M Media Audio, a free mastering limiter with a full metering suite.

Now, we can add Jeesonic’s Metering Cockpit to the list.

Metering Cockpit is available in AU and VST formats for macOS (11 or later) and Windows (10 or later).

Metering Cockpit is a loudness meter with an intuitive interface built around four displays: the meter column, the loudness card, the analyser, and the waveform.

One nice feature of the meter column, besides the True Peak meter, is the colour-coded Crest meter that visualises how much dynamic headroom is left or if you’re squeezing the life out of your track.

The Loudness Card clearly displays Integrated LUFS, Short-Term (last three seconds), Max True Peak (highest peak of the session in dBTP, measured with 4X oversampling), and LRA (loudness range in LUFS; the difference between the quietest and loudest parts).

You also have a graphic display of the loudness history over a set time between fifteen seconds and five minutes. The curve shows the loudness history against your target (dashed line), and you can switch the curve between Momentary, Short-Term, and Integrated.

Everything is nice and clear, with helpful touches like the Integrated readout turning green when you are within 1 LU of your target. Additionally, hovering over any display triggers a short text description of its function.

Some freebies would stop here, but Metering Cockpit goes a bit further with the fractional-octave Analyzer that helps identify problem/clashing frequencies.

The interface is completed with a stereo oscilloscope.

With all the relative information and visual feedback, you can load a reference track for real-world comparison.
