Free Drum VST Plugins

Free Drum VST Plugins

I’ve been testing free drum VST plugins for years, and this is the list I keep coming back to update.

Drums are widely considered the foundation of most music, and I consider them a framework for constructing songs.

Think about it. You have the four-on-the-floor drums for rock, the classic “boots and cats” beat for EDM, the “Un-tz Un-tz” drums for trance, the train beat for country music, the swing beat for jazz, the surf beat for surf, the D-beat for punk, the blast beat for black metal, etc.

That’s obviously an oversimplification, but whatever drumbeat you play, that’s the type of music you’re making. So you could say that drums are somewhat important.

As such, drum VST plugins are fundamental to your music production software collection. Below you’ll find acoustic drum kits, drum synthesizers, drum samplers, and drum machine romplers.

I update this list regularly as new plugins come out and old ones get discontinued.

Which free drum plugin should you choose?

Best for rock, metal, and pop: SSD Free. The Deluxe 2 Kit is mix-ready and punchy, with enough control over the microphone mix to tailor it to your project. BFD Player is my favorite alternative if you need more kit variations and a larger groove library.

Best for electronic and hip-hop: Triaz Player. With 4,000 samples and 200 presets, it covers techno, hip-hop, R&B, and more without any fuss. Drumplayer is another good option if you want lo-fi, glitch, or retro videogame drum sounds.

Best for beginners: LABS Drums or MT Power Drum Kit 2. Both sound great out of the box and require minimal setup. MT Power Drum Kit 2 also has a huge MIDI groove library for learning song arrangement.

Best drum sampler (bring your own samples): Sitala. It’s lightweight, intuitive, and packed with useful per-pad controls. Speedrum Lite is the alternative if you need 16 individual stereo outputs.

Best for sound design: MODO Drum Custom Shop. Physical modeling gives you real-time control over shell material, head type, and tuning without sample pitch-shift artifacts. ChowKick is the pick if you specifically want to design kick drums from scratch.

Best for realistic acoustic drums on a budget: API Drums running inside Decent Sampler. Recorded through API preamps and analog summing, it sounds like a properly tracked studio kit.

SSD Free

SSD Free by Steven Slate Drums

If you produce rock, metal, or pop music, SSD Free is probably the first free drum plugin you’ll hear about. Steven Slate Drums has been an industry name for years, and the free edition lives up to that reputation.

You get one kit (the “Deluxe 2 Kit”) with three variations, but the sounds are polished and mix-ready. I rarely need to do much processing beyond basic EQ when using SSD Free in a rock project.

You also get full control over the microphone mix (direct, overhead, and room channels), the ability to import your own samples, and a library of MIDI grooves organized by genre and song section.

The main limitation is that you get only one kit. If you need jazz brushes or vintage kit tones, you’ll have to look elsewhere on this list.

SSD Free also requires a Slate Digital account and their installer, which is more friction than a simple download. But for rock and pop drums that sit well in a mix right away, it’s hard to beat for free.

More info: SSD Free

BFD Player

Radio-ready drums made easy with the FREE BFD Player

BFD Player is a freeware acoustic drum VST plugin with 5GB of high-quality acoustic drum sounds. That’s unusually generous for a free plugin.

The free plugin is based on BFD3, the flagship drum instrument from BFD Audio. BFD Player includes a smaller sample collection than the paid version, but it does not skimp on velocity layers or channels.

Having used it in several rock mixes, my absolute favorite feature here is the virtual mixer. It’s super intuitive and makes it easy to adjust the drum kit to your mix.

BFD Player also works well with electronic drum kits for real-time triggering, and its 340 built-in MIDI patterns are organized by song section (intro, verse, chorus, fill), which speeds up the arrangement process. The 3D kit view lets you click on drums to customize and preview sounds.

One thing worth mentioning: the BFD brand carries some baggage from BFD3’s stability issues, and several BPB readers have reported confusion with MIDI setup.

The InMusic licensing system can also add startup delays. But the plugin itself sounds great, and the v1.2 update (February 2024) added more kits and groove presets.

More info: BFD Player

MT Power Drum Kit 2

MT Power Drum Kit 2 by Manda Audio.

MT Power Drum Kit 2 was released in 2012 and has since gone completely freeware. It’s a free acoustic drum kit plugin with a built-in mixer and a groove collection you can use to build entire songs.

I’ll be honest, MT Power Drum Kit 2 doesn’t sound as realistic as some of the other drum plugins on this list, but that’s not where its strengths lie. To my ear, it always sounds like those classic 80s over-compressed drums you hear in rock and pop songs of that era.

The kit comes pre-processed with EQ and compression, so it cuts through busy mixes without much additional work. And the main advantage is that it’s relatively lightweight and very easy to use.

If you’re producing retro rock or synthwave with acoustic drums, you’ll love the sounds here. MT Power Drum Kit 2 also has a massive library of MIDI grooves, which might be worth the download alone.

I’ve used it specifically for its groove library in projects where I needed quick drum arrangements.

More info: MT Power Drum Kit 2

LABS Drums

LABS by Spitfire Audio

LABS Drums is an acoustic drum library for the LABS plugin. It delivers mix-ready drum sounds for rock and pop. The interface looks almost too simple, but the drums sound lovely. The library offers solid dynamics and more percussion sounds than you’ll probably need.

It’s also tailored to General MIDI specifications, which is handy if that’s part of your workflow. One drawback is that you can’t customize the drum kit, but that’s not an issue if you want drums that sound great out of the box.

Spitfire also offers a Vintage Drums pack through LABS with a warmer, lo-fi character sampled from a 1975 Ludwig kit. And if you like simple drum plugins in general, check out Soft Drums Lite by Somerville Sounds.

Keep in mind, though, that LABS+ is the current version of the LABS platform, and it still works, but it’s not as good as the original LABS.

More info: LABS Drums

MODO Drum Custom Shop

FREE MODO Drum Custom Shop

MODO Drum Custom Shop is the free edition of IK Multimedia’s MODO Drum, and it works differently from every other plugin on this list.

Instead of playing back samples, it uses physical modeling (modal synthesis) to generate drum sounds in real time. That means you get infinite velocity layers, no round-robin artifacts, and the ability to tune drums without the pitch-shifting weirdness you get with sample-based plugins.

The free version includes one kit (the Studio kit) and the complete MODO Drum engine. You can adjust shell material, depth, head type, snare tension, and microphone placement. It’s the most tweakable free drum plugin available.

The trade-off is CPU usage. I constantly get higher CPU loads compared to sample-based alternatives.

The sound also requires more mixing work to get radio-ready, unlike SSD Free or MT Power Drum Kit 2, which are pre-processed. MODO Drum Custom Shop requires IK Multimedia’s Product Manager for installation.

Organic Calfskin Kit

Organic Calfskin Kit by Organic Drum Loops

Organic Calfskin Kit is a plugin that really surprised me. It sounds a lot better than it looks.

The developer recorded real drums outfitted with calfskin heads, and the result is an organic character you won’t find in other free drum plugins.

Another thing that sets it apart is the variety of articulation options. You get 7 base kits playable with sticks, brushes, or mallets, totaling 18 kit variations. There’s also a 5-microphone layout with individual gain, pan, and aux routing, hi-hat openings that respond to BPM, and cymbal choking.

The controls are simple, but there’s a pitch modulation effect labeled “Weirdness” that I absolutely love using. If you’ve ever used a Korg Volca Sample, you know how much fun pitch-modulating drum sounds can be.

The sounds are completely dry and unprocessed, so you’ll want to add your own reverb and room processing. It’s also a 3.26 GB download and VST3 only. But for raw, organic acoustic drums, this is one of the best free options in 2026.

More info: Organic Calfskin Kit

Addictive Drums DEMO

Addictive Drums DEMO

XLN Audio offers a generous free demo version of Addictive Drums. It has limited functionality, but there are no time restrictions or reductions in sound quality.

Addictive Drums DEMO includes a single drum kit based on the Fairfax Vol. 1 ADpak. It consists of a kick drum, a snare, hi-hats, and a crash cymbal. It’s missing a ride cymbal and toms, but the included drums sound great.

I used Addictive Drums as the main drum kit in several projects, adding third-party ride cymbal and tom samples to fill in the gaps. If all you need is a simple acoustic drum kit for rock, pop, or indie music, this is worth a look.

If you like the base sounds, you can always include the cymbals and toms from other plugins or sample packs.

More info: Addictive Drums DEMO

API Drums

API Drums

Most free drum libraries cut corners on the recording chain. API Drums by Sulcata Sound does the opposite. Released in 2025, it runs inside the free Decent Sampler plugin.

The developer used API 3124V preamps, an API 2500 Bus Compressor, and API analog summing to capture a Mapex Black Panther Blaster 4-piece kit with 5 Paiste Signature cymbals.

I’m completely blown away by the sound quality here. The result sounds like a properly tracked studio session, not a freebie drum kit.

You get 10 preset kits (covering everything from tight room sounds to breakbeat and high-tuned funk) and 50+ MIDI files. Since it runs on Decent Sampler, it works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and even iOS.

The kit is small (4-piece plus cymbals), so the sonic variety is limited compared to multi-kit plugins like SSD Free or Monster Drum. But the recording quality is hard to match for free. If you already use Decent Sampler for other libraries, this is an easy addition.

More info: API Drums

Monster Drum

Monster Drum by Monster DAW.

Monster Drum covers more genres than any other free drum plugin I’ve seen.

Version 3 includes 88 kits across 20 genres: pop, rock, metal, punk, electronic, hip-hop, R&B, synthwave, reggae, jazz, funk, lo-fi, cinematic, industrial, and more. The developer regularly adds new free kits.

All included drum kits are pre-mixed and ready to use. All you need to do is load up the plugin, select a kit, and start playing. The multi-out feature lets you route each drum element independently in your DAW’s mixer.

The amount of stuff you get for free here is impressive, but there are trade-offs. The drums can sound flat in acoustic contexts because there’s no room ambiance baked into the samples.

Adding reverb helps, but it’s not quite the same as using plugins like SSD Free or BFD Player, which model room microphones.

I also noticed a bug where only the first note plays in my DAW, but it doesn’t happen every time.

More info: Monster Drum

Jamstix Free

Jamstix Free

Jamstix does something no other plugin on this list does. Instead of triggering static samples or MIDI loops, it uses AI algorithms to generate drum parts that respond dynamically to your playing.

You can feed it audio or MIDI input, and it reacts like a live drummer would. It’s pretty cool for quickly making drum parts without using pre-made MIDI files.

The free version includes eight drummer models, several playing styles, and 200 drum samples.

I need to flag some concerns, though. The developer (Rayzoon) has not been publicly active for several years. The Mac version has been officially discontinued, and the plugin is VST2 only (no VST3 or AU).

It still works fine on Windows, and the generative drumming is genuinely unique, but the future of the platform is uncertain.

That said, it’s pretty unique, and you can also route Jamstix’s MIDI output to other drum plugins for better sound quality.

More info: Jamstix

Drumgizmo

Drumgizmo

If you’re on Linux, Drumgizmo is probably the best free drum plugin you’ll find.

It’s open-source, supports LV2, and offers multichannel output with mic-bleed simulation, which is the closest free approximation to a real multi-mic drum recording. You can download community-made drum kits and create your own using the included toolkit.

Drumgizmo also runs on Windows and macOS, and it has a dedicated following among open-source audio users. It’s definitely one of the best open-source drum samplers right now.

However, the project’s momentum has slowed. One of the original developers confirmed in late 2024 that he no longer actively works on it.

The wiki still shows recent edits as of early 2026, so it hasn’t been fully abandoned, but development is not what it once was.

Kits also need to be manually downloaded and configured, which requires more setup than most free drum plugins.

EXC!TE SNARE DRUM

EXC!TE SNARE DRUM

Yes, I’m excited about the snare drum. That’s the best type of drum!

On a more serious note, EXC!TE SNARE DRUM is a niche plugin. It lets you model an acoustic snare drum and fully customize the sound to your liking.

You can also play the plugin directly if you have a snare pad or a piezoelectric disk. It’s not something you’d throw on every track, but it’s helpful to have when you need a specific snare tone that sample-based plugins can’t deliver.

It would be great if the developer followed up with a similar plugin for kick drums and hi-hats.

More info: EXC!TE SNARE DRUM

ChowKick

ChowKick by Chowdhury DSP

ChowKick is an open-source kick drum synthesizer based on creative modeling of old drum machine circuits. The developer drew on Kurt Werner’s analysis of the TR-808 to build a synth engine capable of producing everything from soft sub-bass thumps to punchy, aggressive transients.

I reviewed ChowKick when it first came out, and I still reach for it whenever I want a kick sound that isn’t in my sample library. The pulse shape module and resonant filter (with Linear, Basic, and Bouncy modes) give you a surprising range.

It also supports MIDI note-to-frequency tuning, so you can match the kick to your song’s key.

Of course, the learning curve is steeper than loading a sample, and the interface is unusual compared to traditional drum plugins. But that’s the trade-off for a synthesizer that creates sounds you can’t get with samples.

ChowKick is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and it’s a tiny download (around 7 MB).

More info: ChowKick

Sitala

Sitala by Decomposer

Sitala is my drum sampler of choice. It’s lightweight, simple, and has all the controls you’re actually likely to use (unless you’re sampling your handmade cello or something weird like that).

If you’re on Reaper, routing is done automatically.

It looks deceptively simple, but there’s a lot packed in. You get sample trimming, beat slicing, a solid compressor, and a Tone knob that adapts to each sample’s pitch content. Sitala is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux in VST, VST3, AU, AAX, and CLAP formats.

If you already own a collection of drum kits in WAV format, a sampler like Sitala is the only drum VST plugin you’ll ever need.

More info: Sitala

Speedrum Lite

Speedrum Lite by Apisonic Labs

Speedrum Lite is another top choice among freeware drum samplers.

Compared to Sitala, Speedrum Lite offers more control over the Attack and Decay of each sample, dedicated low-pass and high-pass filter knobs per pad, and 16 individual stereo outputs for routing in your DAW. It also supports choke groups and waveform editing with adjustable start/end points.

It’s very simple to use, and you can load 16 samples per slot, which is perfect for layering. Like Sitala, it comes with no samples included, so you’ll need to supply your own.

If you prefer the MPC-style workflow and need professional routing capabilities, Speedrum Lite is the way to go. The full version of Speedrum adds layering, a slicer, and more effects if you outgrow the free edition.

More info: Speedrum Lite

MiniSpillage

AudioSpillage MiniSpillage

This is a free version of a more full-featured paid product, but I wouldn’t dare call MiniSpillage “stripped down.”

MiniSpillage is a drum synthesizer (not a sample player) with three dedicated algorithms: BassDrum, ElectroHiHat, and WoodDrum.

I’m still disappointed they didn’t offer their snare engine instead of the WoodDrum, but that’s understandable. The sounds it generates have a character that sample-based plugins can’t replicate.

Important caveats: MiniSpillage is Mac-only (AU format) and hasn’t been updated in years. The paid DrumSpillage 2.1 added Apple Silicon support in 2024, but MiniSpillage’s M1/M2 compatibility is unclear and may require Rosetta 2.

Windows users will need to look at ChowKick or other drum synths instead.

More info: AudioSpillage MiniSpillage

DrumNet

DrumNet is a powerful AI drum generator.

DrumNet is pretty helpful if you’re starting a new song and need a quick groove to build on.

It’s an 8-slot drum sampler that uses AI to generate drum sounds, so you can build entire kits from scratch without importing samples. The free version includes all functionality from the paid edition except the ability to export AI-generated sounds.

DrumNet works well for hip-hop and electronic music, and its built-in step sequencer lets you create patterns on the spot. Later, if I need more specific sounds, I’ll replace it with another drum VST or a sample pack.

But for getting ideas down fast, it’s a useful starting point.

More info: DrumNet

Drumplayer

Drumplayer by 99Sounds

99Sounds built Drumplayer in collaboration with SampleScience, and it’s one of the few free drum machines with multi-out routing. It includes 20 kits with 14 sounds each, covering hip-hop, electronic, lo-fi, glitch, and experimental genres.

Alongside standard 808 and 909 kits, you get dubstep hits, vinyl-sourced drums, and retro sounds sampled from a Commodore 64 and Game Boy.

Each kit feeds into a 14-channel mixer with per-channel volume and pan. Built-in distortion, reverb, delay, and an LFO are also available for quick sound shaping without loading external effects.

You can’t load your own samples, so you’re limited to the 20 included kits. But even so, it’s handy for sketching electronic drum loops when you don’t want to dig through your sample library.

More info: Drumplayer

BPB Cassette Drums

Cassette Drums (Free Drum VST/AU Plugin)

Our BPB Cassette Drums instrument bundle includes three different drum plugins: Cassette 606, Cassette 808, and Cassette 909.

The plugins were designed by Crimson Merry and are based on drum machine sounds captured by Edgar Maguyon, Gregor Zemljic, and Reddit user Anderson303.

I resampled the source sounds from a tape recorder (with permission from the original creators), adding saturation and grit.

Each drum plugin comes in three flavors: Clean, Warm, and Hot. Clean gives you completely unprocessed raw samples, while Warm and Hot offer varying degrees of saturation. If you need that tape-saturated drum machine sound for lo-fi, synthwave, or hip-hop, these are built specifically for that.

More info: BPB Cassette Drums

Triaz Player

Wave Alchemy's Triaz Player is a new FREE drum plugin with 4000 drum samples

Triaz Player is the free version of Wave Alchemy’s paid Triaz drum plugin. It includes 4,000 drum samples and 200 presets, covering electronic genres like techno, hip-hop, R&B, and more.

This is my go-to drum plugin when starting new electronic music projects. Instead of browsing my local sample library, I go through the Triaz presets until I find something that works for the current track.

The sound design tools (multi-mode filters, envelopes, LFOs) let me tweak presets without leaving the plugin, and the built-in compressor is solid.

Wave Alchemy has always had strong sample quality, and Triaz Player is no exception. If you produce electronic music and want fast access to good drum sounds without building kits from scratch, it’s well worth trying.

More info: Triaz Player

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free drum VST plugin?

SSD Free by Steven Slate Drums is the best free drum VST plugin for rock, metal, and pop in 2026. For electronic music, Triaz Player by Wave Alchemy offers 4,000 samples and 200 presets. If you want the most realistic acoustic drums, BFD Player provides 5GB of high-quality samples with a full mixing section.

What free drum plugin is best for rock music?

SSD Free is the most recommended free drum plugin for rock. Its Deluxe 2 Kit is mix-ready with adjustable mic channels. MT Power Drum Kit 2 is a good alternative if you want a more compressed, retro rock drum sound with a large MIDI groove library.

What free drum plugin is best for hip-hop and electronic music?

Triaz Player by Wave Alchemy is the best free drum plugin for electronic music, with 4,000 samples covering techno, hip-hop, and R&B. Drumplayer by 99Sounds is another good option for hip-hop, lo-fi, and experimental genres, with 20 kits including 808, 909, and retro game console sounds.

Are free drum plugins good enough for professional use?

Yes. Several free drum plugins on this list are used in professional productions. SSD Free and BFD Player deliver studio-quality acoustic drum sounds. Triaz Player uses the same sample library quality as Wave Alchemy’s paid products. The main limitations of free versions are fewer kits and less customization, not lower sound quality.

What is the difference between a drum sampler and a drum ROMpler?

A drum sampler (like Sitala or Speedrum Lite) is a blank instrument that lets you load your own WAV samples onto pads. A drum ROMpler (like SSD Free or Monster Drum) comes with built-in sounds that you can play immediately. Samplers offer more flexibility but require you to source your own sounds. ROMplers are ready to use out of the box.
