Red Sounds is offering the Vox Engine for Native Instruments Kontakt as a free download from their website until September 18th, 2020.

Despite usually being seen as uninteresting or sterile, pop production is more often than not just a hopeful crapshoot. Ungodly amounts of money are spent yearly to produce the next big chart-topping hit, but sounds come in and out of style seemingly at random.

It’s this constant flux of musical trends that makes nailing a truly contemporary song harder than investing in stocks while blindfolded.

That being said, there are a few musical concepts that appear to be sticking around over the last decade. The ubiquity of trap drums and distorted 808s aside, vocal chops are also here to stay for the foreseeable future.

From the somber, vapory cleaves on the intro to Purity Ring’s runaway witch house hit Lofticries, through the dystopian, nightmarish staccato voiced bilabial stops of Major Lazer’s Bubble Butt, vocal chops are so prevalent that you might have stopped noticing they’re there. And let’s not forget the recent J Balvin and Willy William chart-topper Mi Gente, which you’ve definitely heard in a gas station bathroom, but probably didn’t know what it was called.

Oh, and it’s a continuing staple of modern K-Pop, so you know it’s going to be a while until we stop hearing it.

This Kontakt instrument is made for creating chopped vocal melodies and motives easily. It is a massive time saver! These types of sounds mostly used in EDM, Hip-Hop, Trap, RnB, Future Bass, House, Chillout, Pop and are all over the radio nowadays, but, VOX ENGINE will fit in any genre.

While you could make your own, vocal chops are usually so pitched and modulated that whatever original quality was there is lost outside of the fundamental character of the syllable.

With this in mind, Red Sounds have been creating and reiterating on their Vox Engine plugin, which comes prepackaged with all the sounds and ways to affect them you could want. While the latest edition of the Vox Engine is the recently released version 3, Red Sounds are currently offering the original version for the fair price of nothing at all.

Vox Engine comes with a very large and instantly usable library of presets, including tuned samples, vocal effects, and spoken words. There’s a full ADSR envelope, Reverb, Lo and Hi-Pass filters, glide, and a dedicated Speed knob which stretches the samples, and a Drive knob for added grit. A very practical, singular FX knob controls a combination of effects that appear to be preset-specific.

Before you go “oo ee aa aa-ing” to your heart’s content, keep in mind that Vox Engine needs the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt. It will only work for fifteen minutes in the free Kontakt Player.

We have an article that explains the limitations of Kontakt Player and another article that lists the best free Kontakt libraries.

  1. Here just to point out that “archive containing samples” doesn’t mean they’re in WAV format. :-(
And that you have now more than the only excuse of smell to avoid lingering in gas station bathrooms. But to each his own.
