Outobugi releases Toner, a FREE shaping equalizer plugin for Windows.
If you aren’t yet familiar with Outobugi’s work, the Finnish developer’s website is a treasure trove of free plugins. Their plugins are currently only available for Windows, but we may see macOS versions in the future.
In 2023, we featured Dynastia, an OTT clone that stays pretty faithful to the original multiband compressor with one or two twists. Outobugi followed up with a single-band version, Dynastor, earlier this year.
We also had the popular Refire drum effect plugin earlier this year, so the talented developer has been busy. If you missed Refire on its release, it’s worth returning.
This time, Outobugi is back with Toner, a free shaping EQ for Windows.
Toner is a four-band tone-shaping EQ with saturation and de-emphasis.
Each band two has two modes (Left to Right/Mid to Side), Frequency and Gain knobs, along with a Balance control.
The low and high bands are shelving filters, while the mid bands are bell filters.
After the EQ, you can add warmth through the Saturation knob (which saturates the signal with odd harmonics). De-EQ and Delta controls are in the same section (right-hand side of the interface).
De-EQ, or de-emphasis, applies an inverted EQ setting. Delta subtracts the dry signal from the wet.
The remaining controls are the Output knob (sets the output gain after Delta and before Mix) and the Mix (Dry/Wet) knob.
The interface has a few colour schemes and continues the sleek and minimal trend set by previous releases.
Like all independent developers, Outobugi will run into a few bumps and bugs along the way; it’s to be expected.
However, I think the developer is heading in an exciting direction, and I’m not surprised to see some Outobugi plugins have been downloaded tens of thousands of times.
It doesn’t hurt that they look fantastic, too.
Sky Blue EQ4 is another free EQ that looks fantastic, either as a nostalgia trip or as a reminder of hardware we might never own.
Outobugi’s Toner is available in 64-bit VST3 format for Windows.
