KVR is celebrating 20 years of its Developer Challenge, as Developer Challenge 26 gets underway!

For anyone new to the annual Developer Challenge, it’s a chance for developers to showcase their creativity by creating a new free plugin, app, or sound library/pack that benefits the broader music production community.

KVR members vote on their five favorite entries, with their top choice getting five points, the next getting four, and so on.

So, it’s also a substantial feather in the cap for the winner, because the acknowledgment comes directly from the people who will use these tools most.

One of the best things about the KVR Challenge is that it’s not just about the winners and runners-up. There’s a strong sense of community from start to finish, with real appreciation for everyone who creates something that enhances our music production for free.

I’d also like to highlight our readers here, and if I haven’t said it enough in the past, thank you for making BPB such a positive and encouraging space.

This year’s Developers Challenge marks the 20th anniversary of KVR’s annual contest, which deserves huge congratulations, and I hope there are many more years to come.

There are 56 entrants to this year’s Developers Challenge, which means there are 56 freebies available to download right now.

Voting is open, and the winners will be announced on August 4, 2026.

If you look through the current entries for this year’s challenge, you’ll see some names that are pretty familiar around here, like Tilr (FILT-R, REEV-R, QDelay), SocaLabs (Maths, Wavetable), and UnplugRed (ModMan, Magic Carpet).

Hopefully, you’ll discover some new names to follow, too.

Entrants can be simple or complex, but they must be free and creative; those are the only stipulations.

Previous winners also include some familiar names around here, like Solaris by Adam Szabo (2023), WhispAir by Full Bucket Music (2021), and the Youlean Loudness Meter (2016).

There’s a lot of variety in this year’s entrants, from gain-staging (Nejimaki Audio’s CRAYON Gainer) and spectral reverb (Sweet Audio’s Scintillate) to experimental instruments like Focus Time by Touch The Universe Productions.

We talked about turning samples into drum kits recently with Beatsurfing’s VRAC, and one of this year’s entries lets you put sample folders to use in a different way.

Audio Tech Hub’s Pathfinder scans any folder of one-shots, scatters them into a 3D particle field, and creates a playable instrument from any sounds.
