The world of free plugins offers more choices than ever in 2026. However, hoarding hundreds of VSTs you’ll never open only hurts your workflow. I’ve been sorting the good plugins from the mediocre ones since starting BPB in 2009, so you don’t have to.
Everything here is permanently free, with no trials or limited-time offers. Those live on our deals page. Below are the twelve best free VST plugins, one for each major task, covering instruments such as synths, drums, and orchestras; effects such as EQ, reverb, and pitch correction; and a DAW. Each pick comes with a direct download from the developer.

Best Free VST Plugins to Install First (2026)
Best free synthesizer plugin: Surge XT
Surge XT ships with over 2,700 factory patches, and a synth engine that covers virtual analog, FM, wavetable, string physical modeling, a Plaits-style Twist oscillator, and an audio-input oscillator. Two complete scenes per patch let you stack or split the whole thing.
You get 12 LFOs per scene, a 128-node multi-segment envelope, a step sequencer, a Lua formula modulator, and 27 effect algorithms with 56 Airwindows effects inside. It’s probably the deepest free synth ever made, yet the CPU hit is surprisingly low for a synth this deep. In my Vital versus Surge XT comparison, Surge XT came out as a clear winner on presets, FM, physical modeling, MPE, microtuning, and CPU.

Best free Kontakt alternative: Decent Sampler
Decent Sampler has the largest active ecosystem of free sample libraries, with hundreds of Pianobook libraries plus the Decent Samples catalog, and new libraries appearing almost every week. Each one ships with its own developer-built interface, so it loads like a small custom plugin, much like a Kontakt library.
That said, it spares small developers the Kontakt Player licensing fees, which is why so many freebies exist only in this format, and it’s the only way to run Pianobook libraries on Linux. It’s the first sample player I’d install. In my test of six free Kontakt alternatives, the library ecosystem is what settled it.

Best free Kontakt library: Kontakt Factory Selection 2
Factory Selection 2 is a full starter pack in a single library, spanning Acoustic, Band, Beats, Synth, and Vintage categories, from drum kits and choirs to world and orchestral instruments. It’s official Native Instruments content, licensed for commercial use, and runs in the free Kontakt Player with no demo timeout.
My favorite part is the African percussion set, which I still reach for when building percussion loops from scratch. It comes inside Komplete Start together with six more NI instruments, Massive X Player, and effects, no credit card needed. Best free orchestral plugin: Spitfire Symphony Orchestra Discover
This is 44 instruments cut from Spitfire’s flagship Symphony Orchestra and recorded at AIR Studios Lyndhurst Hall, with 74 techniques, 11 solo instruments and three true legato patches. Up to four dynamic layers and two round robins per instrument are things no other free full orchestra offers.
It’s the most realistic-sounding free orchestral library I’ve heard, and what really stood out is how playable it feels. At 5.68 GB, it’s Spitfire’s largest free library, and our review found it perfectly usable on professional projects.

Best free drum plugin: SSD Free
SSD Free gives you Steven Slate’s Deluxe 2 kit in three variations, plus a Classic mix-ready Slate snare. The kit comes pre-processed, so it sits in a rock or pop mix with little more than basic EQ. I rarely need to do more processing than that on a rock project.
You keep the full SSD5 engine, the same fifteen-channel mixer with mic blend control over direct, overhead, and room channels, per-channel envelopes and multiple outputs, and it loads your own samples and saves custom kits. MIDI grooves are organized by genre and song section, and everything is royalty-free for commercial use.

Best free EQ plugin: TDR Nova
Nova is a parallel dynamic equalizer in which each of its four parametric bands can be static or dynamic, so one plugin covers corrective EQ, de-essing, and multiband compression. The dynamic features stay out of the way when you just want a plain parametric EQ.
It’s my go-to EQ for mixing and mastering, and the most impressive thing is how easily it turns from a simple EQ into a precise dynamic tool. Our review also found it clean and smooth as a standard EQ, and it descends from Nova-67P, BPB’s number one free plugin of 2014.

Best free compressor plugin: TDR Kotelnikov
Kotelnikov is a transparent wideband compressor that keeps the timbre and attack of your source intact rather than imitating analog hardware. Peak and RMS detectors get independent release times, a crest-factor control sets the handoff, and each detector has a solo button.
On a drum bus, the fast peak release preserves the transient snap, while the RMS release retains the body. It’s the free compressor I’d download first starting from an empty plugin folder, and I still reach for it on almost every mix bus. Also, it has shown up on professionally released records, which says a lot about its quality.

Best free limiter plugin: Limited-Z
Limited-Z is a look-ahead brickwall limiter built on the algorithms of LVC-Audio’s paid Limited-MAX, and its eight modes cover everything from clean and smooth to loud and punchy, plus a clipper mode. Pick a mode, and the attack, release, knee, look-ahead, stereo linking, and program-dependent release are set for you.
The real-time waveform display overlays gain reduction, and you get a two-minute waveform history plus a spectrum analyzer, inter-sample-peak filtering, and true-peak metering. It delivers mastering-grade results with a setup a beginner can manage, and I like what I’m hearing from it. The free version keeps all the modes and the metering.

Best free reverb plugin: Valhalla SuperMassive
SuperMassive is a reverb and delay hybrid built on feedback delay networks, with a Warp control that morphs echoes into reverb. There are 22 modes, each a distinct algorithm, and the Sirius mode works as an everyday room, hall, or cathedral reverb.
Decays can stretch to thousands of seconds in Andromeda mode, all from ten controls, with a resizable interface and low CPU load. If I could keep one creative sound design effect in my DAW, it would be SuperMassive. Pair it with OrilRiver for natural rooms, and you cover most reverb needs. Best free autotune plugin: Graillon 3 Free Edition
Graillon 3 Free Edition gives you three pitch engines: the Graillon 2 engine, the updated Graillon 3 engine, and the I1 engine taken from Auburn’s Inner Pitch and retuned for vocals. It covers transparent correction and hard-tune styles, with adjustable scale, correction speed, and note-detection range, plus pitch shifting and formant shifting in the free edition.
Five vocal-tuned effects (compressor, gate, chorus, preamp, bitcrusher) are built in with no added latency, and the mix knob blends dry vocal with the tuned signal for a chorus-like thickening. For me, it’s the best free autotune right now, and the flexibility of having multiple engines is what edges it ahead.

Best free saturation plugin: IVGI
IVGI is built on the same algorithms as Klanghelm’s paid SDRR, with a base sound comparable to SDRR’s DESK mode, and it covers everything from subtle master-bus warmth to dense single-track distortion. Its “controlled randomness” models the internal drift and variance of analog gear, and every internal process reacts dynamically to input level.
The ASYM MIX control changes the symmetry of the distortion without touching the harmonic content much, and RESPONSE changes how saturation depends on frequency. Four knobs, a great sound, and my pick for the best free saturation plugin, whether I’m warming a mix bus or driving a single track.

Best free DAW: Waveform Free
Waveform Free gives you unlimited audio and MIDI tracks, while Pro Tools Intro stops at 8 audio tracks and Live Lite at 8 tracks total. It’s the only full DAW in our guide that runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi, hosts VST, VST3, and AU plugins, and works offline.
Version 14 added a bring-your-own-key AI assistant, a tag-based browser, overhauled stock plugins and ARA2, and the whole thing still feels like a paid DAW rather than a lite version. I’ve used it for full projects on my M1 MacBook Air, and I still use it while traveling. My side-by-side test of four free DAWs explains why it came out on top.

Common Questions
Which plugin format do I need: VST2, VST3, AU, AAX or CLAP?
VST3 is the current Steinberg format, and it is what most Windows and macOS DAWs load today. VST2 is legacy, and some new plugins no longer ship in it. AU (Audio Units) is Apple’s format, used by Logic Pro and GarageBand on macOS. AAX is for Pro Tools only. CLAP is a newer open format supported by Bitwig, Reaper, and a growing number of plugins.
The practical rule is simple. Install the VST3 build unless your DAW is Logic Pro or GarageBand (AU) or Pro Tools (AAX). Each pick’s “Runs on” line shows its formats.
How do I install a free plugin on Windows or Mac?
Most developers ship an installer that puts the files in the standard folders: on Windows, that is C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3; on macOS, /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 for VST3 and /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components for AU. After installing, rescan your plugins in the DAW. Most DAWs have a plugin manager or a scan button in preferences.
Two things to know. On macOS, a first launch of an unsigned build may need Gatekeeper approval (right-click the app, then choose Open). And modern DAWs are 64-bit only, so they will not load 32-bit plugins.
Are free VST plugins safe to download?
Yes, if you stick to the right sources. Download only from the developer’s own site or their official store page, and every download link on this page goes to the developer. Avoid “free VST” mirror sites and cracked commercial plugins, since they are the usual malware route and the cracks tend to be unstable mid-session.
The free tiers from established developers on this page are supported products, not stripped demos, unless the “What is free” line says otherwise.
Which free DAW should I start with?
Waveform Free by Tracktion runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with no track limit, and it hosts VST3 and AU plugins. It is my top overall pick on the free DAW guide.
GarageBand is the obvious starting point on a Mac. On Windows, Cakewalk Sonar has a free tier, while the older Cakewalk by BandLab is retired and can no longer be activated. If you want everything in one place, the free music production software guide covers DAWs, editors, and beat-making tools.

I install and use every instrument and effect on this page on my M1 MacBook Air and my Windows 10 laptop, mostly in Studio One, on real material like drum buses, vocal takes, and full mixes.
